Fascination of Plant Day Celebrated as “Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav” at NABI

Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav open day event” along with “the International Day for Biological Diversity” and “Fascination of Plant Day-2021 (FoPD)” was organised at National Agri Food Biotechnology institute (NABI) under the umbrella of Science Setu and European Plant Science Organization on 25th May 2021.

Dr. Ashwani Pareek, Executive Director, NABI, while inaugurating the open day event emphasized on” fulfilling the dream of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi ji to make India a self-reliant nation. He further stated that in tomorrow’s India, the nation shall merge the best of traditions with modern, and global outlook while facing the future challenges. Prof. Neera Bhalla Sarin, National Coordinator, FoPD, India, briefed the audience regarding the importance of plant sciences for agriculture and pharmaceuticals and sustainable production of nutritious food. Dr. Nitin Singhal, science setu coordinator, NABI highlighted that the event had provided opportunity for college students and teaching faculty to get an exposure to cutting edge research.

Dr. K C Bansal, Professor and Former Director, National Bureau of Plant Genetic Resource (NBPGR), Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), New Delhi delivered a lecture on “Harnessing Agrobiodiversity for Food and Nutrition” to celebrate the occasion. He suggested that the problem of nutrition and food security can only be addressed by optimum utilization of plant biodiversity. Dr Bansal also emphasised on protecting the mother nature and plant biodiversity. One can protect agricultural biodiversity by diversifying food and diet resources, and also promote underutilised or neglected food crops. The fascination of plant event was attended by approximately hundred students and faculties of various colleges, universities and Research Institute. The event was concluded by proposing a vote of the thanks.
