Fascination of Plants Day

The seventh international “Fascination of Plants Day” around 18 May 2024 will be launched by plant scientists across the world under the umbrella of the European Plant Science Organisation (EPSO).

The goal of this activity is to get as many people as possible around the world fascinated by plants and enthused about the importance of plant science for agriculture and sustainable production of nutritious food, as well as for horticulture, forestry and the production of plant-based non-food products such as paper, timber, chemicals, energy and pharmaceuticals. The role of plants in environmental conservation is also a key message.

Everybody is welcome to join this initiative!

The Nordic Journal of Botany would like to share their Fascination of Plants with you! Every year, we receive many beautiful botanical drawings of newly discovered plant species. They showcase the fascinating and inspiring diversity of plants. We selected a few of these drawings and would like to know which one fascinates YOU the most! During May, we will post details about each plant species and the corresponding publication on our social media accounts. The winner of the voting will be selected at the end of May!

The climate change is happening and many efforts are made to stop it. But what role can plants play? Can we mitigate climate changes by increasing the capacity of plants to harness CO2? Should we change he species we grow and how we grow them? Change our diets? What will make a difference and what is doable?

Join PlantLink on Fascination of Plants day 18/5 2022 from 15.00 (coffee, seminar start 15.30) at the Blue hall, Ecology Building, LU and online for a moderated discussion  on the roles of plants to mitigate climate change. More information at www.plantlink.se

Moderator: Science journalist Peter Sylwan. The invited speakers are Marie Nyman, retiring Chief Secretary of Gentekniknämnden, Eva Johansson, director of SLU Grogrund, Martin Sykes, professor emeritus at the Department of Physical Geography and Ecosystem Science, and Eva Tornberg, professor emeritus and founder of Veg of Lund. It is also a great chance to meet PlantLink’s incoming director, Federico Gomez

Which kind of plants have people eaten thousand years ago and how did they prepare their food? How does the pollen look like that causes allergies and how have the plants we eat developed over time? Find out what is the plant’s favourite food, discover their bacterial and fungal neighbours, meet plant astronauts and be amazed at how different plants can look like. On the 21st of May, we invite you to a day filled with different activities around plants and plant research. Pass by and get fascinated!

The Fascination of Plants Day 2022 in Umeå is organised by Umeå Plant Science Centre together with Curiosum, Umeå University and SLU. Plant scientists will present their favourite plants, you can take a look into the underground life watching plant roots and their fungal friends, test how elastic plants are and do many more activities.

Bonsaisällskapet will show bonsai trees from our forest trees and the Friends of Arboretum Norr will present the diversity of trees and bushes growing at the arboretum in Baggböle and that derive from different parts of the world. You can find all activities offered on our official programme side.

The Linnean Centre is a collaboration between the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) and Uppsala University. On the occasion of Fascination of Plants Day 2022 The Linnean Centre will join the birthday celebration of Carl Linnaeus in The Linnaeus Garden, hosting a “research corner” together with other SLU departments.

In the research corner there will be experiment stations, where children and adults can discover the fascinating world of plants. Visitors can curl dandelion stems, look at onion peels, stems and stomata in microscopes, extract DNA from fruit, color white anemones, sow a plant and much more.

There will also be mini lectures about plants in conjunction to the experiment stations with titles as: “Why plants can adapt to Chernobyl radiation”, “Ancient cereals in the bread of the future” and “How plants adapt to a changeable environment”.
