11th Botany Practical Workshops
XI Jornadas de Prácticas de Botánica
León

seminar

The aim of this conference is to make botany visible to the university environment and the general public, at the same time as familiarising them with the scientific world. Nowadays there is a growing disconnection with nature and the public is not aware of what surrounds them. This separation between the natural world and the human being is aggravated when talking about plants, which he has termed “plant blindness”. Plants are essential to ensure the quality of the air we breathe, the balance of our ecosystem, or for all the supplies they provide us with: food, fibres, dyes, fuels, environmental services (temperature regulation, carbon capture, reduction of pollution and ultraviolet radiation, etc.). For this reason, the 10th Practical Botany Conference aims to alleviate plant blindness and, at the same time, bring the scientific world closer to students and the general public. Specifically, the aim is to: -Awaken students’ and the general public’s interest in plants -Sensitise awareness of the problems of conservation of these indispensable beings -Introduce students and the general public to the formats of knowledge transfer in scientific forums -Encourage the acquisition of skills in the development of critical thinking and scientific argumentation.

The success of learning requires reconsidering the methodology used, in order to avoid the inertia of classical conceptions that caused demotivation and inaction of the students. The current event gives continuity to the two previous editions, held at the Faculty of Biology, and addressed to students of plant physiology from the Biology and Biotechnology degrees. This activity gives the students the opportunity to be more active in their curricular development, strengthening autonomous learning and the management of bibliographic resources, being able to conduct writing and speaking of a scientific issue, always in English language otherwise. Also, activities like this, could be beneficial to promoting the interaction between students and also the binomial student-teacher, in the forums enabled on virtual platforms, in the training sessions performed by teachers, also during the poster and oral communication sessions, as well as in the coffee breaks. According to the students, this is an encouraging activity, which is being the more and more engaged.
