Join Marina Dermastia, holder of the honorary title of Science Communicator awarded by the Slovenian Science Foundation, on a unique journey into the realm of plants. She will reveal the many secrets that plants hold. At the entrance to the kingdom, you will put on your “plant glasses”, which will clear your view of the green carpet woven by plants. All of them, even the ones that seem ordinary and insignificant, have their own fascinating stories to tell. They have taken on a life of their own in every habitat on this, our only home, planet Earth, from temperate climates, to the high mountains, the white frozen vastness of the poles and the depths of the sea; many are carnivorous or even parasitic. They have forged very intimate relationships with their pollinators over millions of years of living together, seducing them with exquisite perfumes and sumptuous clothing. Like us, they travel – sometimes only short distances to get a better place in the warm sun, and sometimes very far, even across the ocean. You may think we are plant masters. But the truth is very different: we are just players in a strategic game that plants started playing long before us and many of the animals that live today.
S svojimi opraševalci so v milijonih let skupnega življenja sklenile zelo intimne odnose, zapeljujejo jih z izbranimi parfumi in razkošnimi oblačili.
A forest is one of the most complete ecosystems to have evolved on Earth, and is made up of many species of plants and animals. Slovenia is home to more than 70 indigenous tree species, and if you add in the foreign species, the range is truly diverse. In this workshop, we will learn about the many tree species, their peculiarities and differences, compare them and use puzzles to build trees.
Understanding the relationships between micro-organisms and plants is key to creating new, environmentally friendly plant protection systems. You will learn about a special group of micro-organisms that we study at the National Institute of Biology. These are endophytes that can be used as natural plant defences against stress factors. During the workshop you will be able to admire the diversity of micro-organisms that (co-)live in plants and try your hand at DNA isolation. In addition, you will learn about the diversity of communication between plants and micro-organisms through a practical example.
Through various fun and educational activities, participants will learn how water flows through plants and what role it plays in their growth. With the help of colored ink, we will track how water travels through plants and observe the coloring of the flowers. We will also take a look at plants and algae that grow in water. We will learn about their adaptations to this lifestyle and their significance for the aquatic ecosystems.
There are many different ways to generate electricity on Earth, but you probably didn’t know that we can also generate electricity from plants. Together we will learn some basic concepts related to electricity and how they are also present in plants. Come and help us build plant batteries.
Pridite in nam pomagajte sestaviti rastlinske baterije.
At our stand we will present the biodiversity of wild pollinators in Slovenia, especially bumblebees and solitary bees. We will highlight the importance of maintaining flowering areas and meadows for wild pollinators and their crucial importance in agriculture and fruit growing. We will also show children/visitors at the stand how to attract wild pollinators to their home garden.
In the Forest of Experiments, children will learn about tree species, their life strategies and adaptations to environmental conditions in an interactive way. They will think about the impact of climate change on forests and how forests are changing in the light of climate change. They will design their own forest of the future that will be able to withstand these changes.
Slovenia is a traditional fruit-growing country that enables the cultivation of numerous fruit species. We can grow distinctly Mediterranean spices (such as olive, fig, and almond) as well as fruit more typical for cultivation in the continental zone (apple, pear, plum, cherry, berries…).
In the first part of presentation, pupils will be introduced to the diversity of fruit species.
Then, in the interactive workshop, they will solve riddles about fruit and complete traditional Slovenian proverbs related to fruit growing.
We will learn the difference between a tree-ring (or annual growth) and a year-line in the trunk of a tree, how the tree grows depending on the environmental conditions. We will learn to determine: 1. type of wood (diffuse or ring porous), 2. age and 3. calendar year and season (summer, winter) when the tree was cut. We will find out how dendrochronology can help archaeology.
Pollen is produced in the anthers of flowers. At the workshop, we will get to know the pollen of different plants. Students will look at photos of pollen grains or find and look at the real pollen on nearby flowers and try to find out which plant the pollen belongs to with the help of the identification key.
Pelod (cvetni prah) nastaja v prašnikih cvetnic. Na delavnici bomo spoznali pelod različnih rastlin. Učenci bodo pogledali fotografije pelodnih zrn ali le-tega poiskali na bližnjih cvetlicah in s pomočjo določevalnega ključa poskusili ugotoviti, kateri rastlini pelod pripada.
Turgor pressure is the force within the cell that presses the plasma membrane against the cell wall. It is related to the water content of the cell, but also depends on the concentration of dissolved substances. In herbaceous plants, the loss of turgor is manifested by wilting. However, a decrease in turgor also influences many other processes in plants.
For normal growth and development, plants need sufficient water and mineral nutrients, i.e. chemical elements such as nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, etc. These resources are efficiently absorbed by the plant roots. We will show how roots develop in soils with different levels of water and minerals.
Rastline morajo za normalno rast in razvoj iz okolja pridobiti zadosti vode in mineralnih hranil (kemijskih elementov kot so dušik, fosfor, kalij in drugi). To nalogo učinkovito opravljajo korenine. Na stojnici bo prikazan razvoj korenin v tleh z različno količino mineralnih hranil in vode.
Diversity of seeds/fruits of agricultural plants, especially cereal grains, will be interactively presented. We will highlight that the biochemical composition of grains with similar morphology can substantially differ. The properties of wheat, rye and their hybrid triticale, which was breeded by slovenian botanist Fran Jesenko, will be exposed.
We will present some of the most common plant species within the vegetable groups, such as kale crops, leafy vegetables and fruiting vegetables. We will practically present which are more suitable for growing in indoors and which outdoors; when in the year can be grown, and we will also demonstrate some growing techniques and growing substrates where some of them can also be grown.
Plants fascinate us primarily by their appearance, which is enriched by their diverse shapes, colors, smells and survival abilities. This time we invite you to discover the hidden inner world of plants. A look through the microscope will show you how plants are structured, where their saps flow, you will understand their usefulness and realize that looking into plants is looking into the basic laws of life.
Different examples of microbial symbiosis (bacteria and fungi) that help plants with water absorption and mineral nutrition, therefore improving their growth, will be presented. We will focus on mycorrhiza, a symbiosis of plants and fungi crucial in colonizing land more than 400 million years ago. We will closely examine different types of mycorrhiza (ectomycorrhiza and endomycorrhiza) under the (stereo) microscope and some isolated fungi in pure tissue cultures.
Even the flowers conquer: namely the pollinators. How do they attract the attention of animals – mostly insects – and is there a fatal attraction between a single type of pollinator and a type of plant? Eternal loyalty in the world of flowers and pollinators will be scrutinized at the Dream Flower workshop.
Tudi cvetovi osvajajo: opraševalce namreč. Kako pritegnejo pozornost živali – večinoma žuželk – in ali obstaja usodna privlačnost med posamezno vrsto opraševalca in vrsto rastline? Večno zvestobo v svetu cvetov in opraševalcev bomo vzeli pod drobnogled na delavnici Sanjski cvet.
Are you also bothered by the fact that you keep mixing up pollination and fertilization? Do not worry. Together we will look at the differences and compare them to the spreading of plants.
Trees are the biggest green charmers of the world. At our stand you will get to know the importance of different tree species, differences among them and their role in the ecosystem. You will use the identification key to recognize different coniferous and deciduous trees.
Drevesa so največji zeleni očarljivci našega planeta.

We will learn that there are also plants in water, and compare them with terrestrial plants. Using the senses, we will learn about some of the most interesting examples and their importance in ecosystems. So, next time we will also pay more attention to the green inhabitants of the waters.

Silk, which is obtained from silkworm cocoons, has been a valued natural fibre since ancient times. In the former sericulture regions, centuries-old mulberry trees are living monuments of the once active silkworm rearing. We will introduce you to the botanical characteristics of the white and black mulberry trees and the various ways in which they can be utilised. We will also present the development of silkworms and a variety of silk products designed by students and professors of the High School of Design Maribor and the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of the University of Maribor.
A rose, a cup of coffee, a crackling fire. These are just three of the approximately one trillion odours that the human nose and brain can distinguish from one another, according to a new study. Researchers have previously estimated that humans can detect about 10,000 smells. Can you distinguish and even recognise the smells of different plant species?
Vrtnica, skodelice kave, prasketanje ognja.
Different varieties of grapevines look roughly the same, but on closer look they differ in several characteristics, such as the shape of the leaves. In addition to vines, many other plants grow in the vineyard, which also have beneficial effects. With the help of the identification key, we will determine the shape of the leaves of different grape varieties, and by answering the questions, we will get to know other plant species found in the vineyard, as well as the aromas found in the grapes.
We will learn about some different seeds of foreign and our species. Students will get real seeds to look at and learn from which plant species the seeds are.
Spoznali bomo nekaj različnih semen tujih in avtohtonih vrst. Učenci bodo dobili prava semena, ki si jih bodo ogledali in spoznali kateri rastlinski vrsti ustrezajo.
Although the conditions for growing in the mountains are challenging, some plants are well adapted to them. At the stand you will see how plants have adapted to life in the mountains and take part in a quiz.
The alternative workshop form of one of the most popular, but not so easily accessible, printmaking techniques offers an insight into understanding screenprinting and produces excellent results – prints. The theme of this year’s workshop is the spring meadow in bloom, so we are printing flowers. A short introduction to the technique will be followed by a practical session where children, with the help of their mentors, will produce their own prints which they will work on further by adding their own artistic elements to the printed images produced.
Alternativna delavniška oblika ene najbolj priljubljenih, a težje dostopnih grafičnih tehnik ponuja vpogled v razumevanje sitotiska in daje odlične rezultate – odtise. Motiv letošnje delavnice je cvetoči spomladanski travnik, tiskamo cvetje. Kratki predstavitvi tehnike sledi praktični del, v katerem otroci ob pomoči mentoric izvedejo svoj odtis, ki ga nato tudi likovno dopolnijo.

Medicinal plants have been used for centuries to treat a variety of health problems. We are also familiar with a large number of poisonous plants. Some were used to make poison for arrows in hunting and fighting. Others were used for capital punishment. But did you know that even medicinal plants can be poisonous if not used properly?
Labiates (Lamiaceae) are an abundant food source for pollinators and indispensable spices in every kitchen, as well as in folk medicine. About 100 labiate species in 32 genera grow in Slovenia. On our stand we will explore the secrets of this plant family and have fun with the variety of their aromas.

Plants have evolved a variety of ways with which they protect themselves and their seeds and spreading them in a most efficient way. You are invited to explore this secret life of plants in our workshop.

Two interactive games will be presented, which will show the richness of meadows, their types and inhabitants, especially pollinators. We will present the significance of biodiversity and appropriate meadow management, that suits both plant and animal species. Seeds of meadow plant species will be on display to admire diversity of their shapes.
Ekstenzivno obdelani travniki so vrstno najbolj bogati življenjski prostori v Evropi.
An invasive species is a species that is not indigenous, or native, to a particular area. They have a great impact on the ecosystems and are therefore an important topic of discussion in biology. Often, they do not only cause problems to the native plant species, but also to the local wildlife and humans, so it is very important that we know how to recognise them and use different methods to effectively remove them. Aside from valuable information we will also provide you with a small »uninvasive« present.
About 6% of the more than 300,000 species of plants that exist in the world live in water. So the divers encounter plants on their dives. In this workshop, divers will show participants how they see plants and what equipment they use for dives.
The Juliana Alpine Botanical Garden is part of the Triglav National Park, the only national park in Slovenia that covers a large part of the Julian Alps, or four per cent of Slovenia’s territory. Its 100th anniversary is being celebrated under the slogan “Conservation is Existence”, and in Juliana we are also conserving. On this tour, you will learn about the protected, rare and endangered plants that we are keeping alive in the garden for future generations.
The exhibition presents the life of Joannes Antonius Scopoli, a tireless naturalist who spent 15 of the most fruitful years of his life in Idrija. Scopoli was not only a taxonomist and systematist, but he also drew knowledge from the Cranians and wanted to help them with his experience and findings. His descriptions of the living world are also of nature conservation significance, showing us the nature of Slovenia 250 years ago. In this way, we can trace species that have already become extinct in certain areas.
Many non-native species of plants and animals have been introduced by humans. Some have made our lives easier, like potatoes, maize and peppers. But some have spread beyond all boundaries in their new environment and are slowly but surely replacing native flora and fauna, thus destroying biodiversity in some areas. Visitors will be able to test their knowledge of these and others in an exciting prize quiz.
2024 marks the 100th anniversary of the first protected area in Slovenia – the Alpine Conservation Park, the predecessor of the Triglav National Park. The latter covers most of the Julian Alps and is home to around 120 bird species. Bird experts (ornithologists) can identify them by their calls, and you can regularly see some of them in the Julian Alpine Botanical Garden in Trento. You are invited to learn about birds with ornithologist Dareto Fekonja from the Slovenian Bird Ringing Centre, which is part of the Natural History Museum of Slovenia.
