Where are the properties of plants coded?
Kje so zapisane lastnosti rastlin?
Biološko središče, Večna pot 111, 1000 Ljubljana

Outdoor
handsonactivities

A gene is the basic physical and functional unit of inheritance that contain the information needed to specify biological traits. At the molecular level, a gene is part of a DNA molecule. In the workshop you will be able to try how to isolate plant DNA and how to determine its amount. You will also learn how to determine if a plant contains the desired gene and how strongly it is expressed.

The scents of plants and insects
Kako dišijo rastline in kako žuželke?

Plants produce many volatile substances with different biological roles: to attract pollinators, communicate with other plants, repulse herbivores and other pests or to attract their pests’ enemies. With our workshop, we will explore different plant fragrances and the chemical structures of their main components, which we will also try to isolate from plants. Additionally, we will talk about a group of chemically related substances that are synthesized by insects, but can also be produced in plants. They are insect pheromones, which we humans cannot detect, but can still be useful for us.

Less known fruit species of our area
Manj znane sadne vrste našega prostora

Outdoor
handsonactivities

The climate conditions of central Slovenia enable the production of many fruit species. The less known common fruit species are those from the forest margin that have the gathering characterictics. In Slovenia there are also many forgotten, but once very widespread fruit species as well as novelties that are gaining ground in the production. Fruits of species such as Amelanchier canadensis, Cornus mas, Ziziphus sativa either of Mespilus germanica represent a variety and also a complement to the fruit offer.

Some plants need support for their growth towards the sun. One of such plants is also hop and this workshop will give an insight, how can a plant without trunk grow up to 12 m high. Through the workshop, students will learn how hop is grown, propagated and also why sexual reproduction is important in hop growing. Hop is not only charming for the brewers, but also for giving a shade on a sunny terrace.

About the role of turgor in plants
O pomenu turgorja za delovanje rastlin

Turgor pressure is the force within the cell that pushes the plasma membrane against the cell wall. It is related with cell water content, but depends also on solute concentration. In herbaceous plants the turgor loss is manifested in wilting. A decrease of turgor, however, influences many other processes in plants.

We do not always need fertile soil to grow fresh vegetables, because vegetables can also grow successfully in the hydroponic system, where we provide them with a nutrient solution with the most important nutrients. At the stand we will get some information about the hydroponic system, which is suitable for growing various vegetables – lettuces, cabbage crops, fruit vegetables, onions, tubers and spices. The answers to the short questions will improve your knowledge about the features of hydroponic cultivation, vegetable varieties and the necessary care of hydroponically grown plants.

We will present different examples of microbial symbiosis (bacteria and fungi) that help plants with water absorption and mineral nutrition, therefore improving their growth. Our focus will be on mycorrhiza, a symbiosis of plants and fungi that was crucial in colonizing land more than 400 million years ago. We will take a closer look into different types of mycorrhiza (ectomycorrhiza and endomycorrhiza) under the (stereo) microscope and some isolated fungi in pure tissue cultures.

The transitional zone between the water and its catchment area, overgrown with wetland plants, is very important in preventing the pollution of a river or lake, as it retains substances that would otherwise be washed directly into the water. If this buffer zone is removed, the pollutants flow directly into the water and worsens its quality and conditions for water biota. We will make a simple system of the cultivated land and waterbody with riparian wetland and without it to show that the riparian zone retains pollutants from the hinterland of rivers or lakes.

Mulberries are unknown to many people today, while the older inhabitants of the former sericultural regions remember how they picked the fruits and harvested the leaves to feed the silkworms. Silk, obtained from silkworm cocoons, was in the Austro-Hungarian Empire a prized natural fibre. The centuries-old mulberry trees that have been preserved in Slovenia are living monuments to the once active silkworm rearing. We will present the botanical characteristics of the white and black mulberry tree and the many ways in which it can be used. The development of the silkworms from hatching to the silk cocoon will be demonstrated.

Because plants cannot travel around on their own, they have developed other methods to disperse their pollen grains and seeds using animals. But in return they have to reward them with something. We will look at how and with what. The workshop is organised withing the COST Action CA18201 ConservePlants.

A v zameno jih morajo z nečim nagraditi. Pogledali si bomo, kako in s čim. Delavnica poteka v okviru COST Akcije CA18201 ConservePlants.

On the stand we have cubes that represent different elements of nature. With the help of the whole group, we will try to put chaos into the harmony of nature through the ropes.

S pomočjo celotne skupine bomo poskusili preko vrvi sestaviti kaos v harmonijo narave.

The alternative workshop format is one of the most popular, but also one of the most difficult to access printmaking techniques. It offers an insight into understanding screen printing and produces excellent results – prints. A short introduction to the technique is followed by a practical part where the children make prints. The motif is, according to the title of the event, related to nature; we will print leaves, flowers, roots.

Alternativna delavniška oblika ene najbolj priljubljenih, a težje dostopnih grafičnih tehnik ponuja vpogled v razumevanje sitotiska in daje odlične rezultate – odtise. Kratki predstavitvi tehnike sledi praktični del, v katerem otroci izvedejo svoje odtise.

The diverse mixture of plants in the garden also attracts numerous pollinators, including several species of wild bees, bumblebees, butterflies, beetles and other insects. Plants attract them with their scent, colour and nectar, while some of them even temporarily shut their pollinators in. Which particular insects you can see in Juliana, will be explained to you by Dr Tomi Trilar, Head of the Invertebrate Department s of the Slovenian Museum of Natural History.

Admission to the garden as per the price list; guided tours are free.
