The eighth international “Fascination of Plants Day” around 18 May 2026 will be launched by plant scientists across the world under the umbrella of the European Plant Science Organisation (EPSO).
The goal of this activity is to get as many people as possible around the world fascinated by plants and enthused about the importance of plant science for agriculture and sustainable production of nutritious food, as well as for horticulture, forestry and the production of plant-based non-food products such as paper, timber, chemicals, energy and pharmaceuticals. The role of plants in environmental conservation is also a key message.
Everybody is welcome to join this initiative!
Mrs Simona Ciupe, Assoc.Prof. at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine is a passionate photographer. From plants, insects, animals, all kind of living organisms are showed in an impressive manner. More than 50 photos will be presented in front of the audience at this special day, The Fascination of Plants Day 2019 !!!
Surely , the exhibition will continue to be presented the next weeks in the library exhibition space.
Penlopas’ garden is an event which presents, as an exhibition followed by a presentation, interesting, less known plants which are found in wild areas and can be domesticated in our gardens or “preserved” in nice pots… It is a mixture of science, technology and art to take the best benefit of the plants charm. The event will attract a large audience, from old to young people, parents and children from the city, professionals dedicated to Plant Science and Biotechnology. The event is realized and coordinated by Prof. Corina Catana, from the Faculty of Horticulture.
The Faculty of Agriculture from the University of Agricultural Sciences and Veterinary Medicine has a research station dedicated to medicinal plants. Lavender is one of the most beautiful, being honored at this special day dedicated to the plant fascination. This event includes a presentation of the fields cultivated with lavender, the technology behind its production, all possibilities to benefit from the lavender potential, either directly as a nice smelling plant, an insect repellent or as raw material for food and cosmetics. The coordinator of the event is prof. Dan Varban.
The organizers prepared the competition of ecologic projects about the « Fascinating adaptations of Plants at different living environments » . Such projects are realized by students from the Faculty of Biology, as well by school children passionate by plants and the environmental protection. The best projects will be selected and awarded by the professionals from the „Alexandru Borza” Botanical Garden of Cluj-Napoca, one of the most beautiful and diverse gardens in Europe. The event will be coordinated by Dr. Victoria Cristea.
“Adopt a plant” is an open day workshop dedicated to the subtle interaction between human senses and plants biosensors. The event involves students who are encouraged to take home and to take care of a chosen, preferred plant. It is organized by the students’ association (OSPN) from the Faculty of Biology, University “Babes-Bolyai” Cluj-Napoca. The coordinator is Assoc.Prof. Anca Butiuc.
Green Gastronomy is a students’ competition initiated 2 years ago, at Fascination of Plants Day, now at the second edition. It aims to select the best recipes and gastronomy ideas and solutions to combine different plants, vegetables and fruits, in a tasty plate. The winners of this competition will be selected by representatives of different food companies and restaurants. Diplomas and other awards are provided for the best students. This event is organized by the Faculty of Food Science and Technology and coordinated by Assoc.Prof. Sonia Socaci and Assist.Prof. Lucian Cuibus.
More than 50 years ago, Dr. Edward Bach discovered 38 flower remedies that act on the disharmony within humans, especially in psychosomatic illnesses and improve their recovery. This theory is presented in our event and describes the remedies in such a way that patients taking them will gain deeper insight into the psychological concepts, thereby enhancing the potential for self-healing. Floral therapy Bach will be of great interest for people of all ages, invited to this event which is coordinated by Lecturer Dr. Mirela Fărăgău and Dr. Sorina Dârjan.
Long lasting folkloric traditions in Romania are organically connected with the environment and plant kingdom. The rural areas are especially rich in a variety of wild flora, including medicinal and aromatic plants, most of them used for their essences, remedies for different diseases, coloring agents for wool and other tissues. This event will include a presentation which reflect all aspects of the plants involvement in the Romanian folklore. A large audience, from professionals, to students, old or young people from the city will be present. The event is realized and coordinated by Lecturer Dr. Alina Crișan and Asist.Prof. dr. Ramona Buzgar.
Without plants the life is not possible. Humans and animals are dependent on oxygen, produced by plants , which are extremely useful also for converting the carbon dioxide to oxygen. Basic and new knowledge related to the intimate link between man and plant is presented at this event. The audience will be represented by students, professors and not only, the communication language will be close also to non-professionals, such as old and young people, children coming from the city. The event is realized and coordinated by Assoc. Prof.dr. Ioana Roman and Lecturer Dr. Tunde Giurgiuman.
More than 20 BSc and MSc students from the Faculty of Horticulture are presenting their plant arrangements in innovative pots and environments. The audience will be large, from children and parents, to students, professors, doctorands. The event is coordinated by professor Mirela Cordea
