O sétimo “Dia Mundial do Fascínio das Plantas” 2024 (FoPD 2024) está a ser lançado por cientistas de plantas de todo o mundo sob a égide da European Plant Science Organisation (EPSO).
Pretende-se com esta iniciativa fazer com que o maior número possível de pessoas em todo o mundo desperte para o fascínio das plantas e para a importância do seu estudo na melhoria da agricultura e produção sustentável de alimentos, bem como para a horticultura, silvicultura e produção de bens não-alimentares, como papel, madeira, químicos, fármacos e energia. O papel determinante das plantas na conservação do meio ambiente será igualmente objeto de destaque.

Art Nouveau gained popularity throughout Europe in the transition from the 19th to the 20th century and, in Aveiro, in particular, in the period between 1904 and 1920, using Nature as its main source of inspiration.
The presence of nature motifs on the Art Nouveau façades of Aveiro is a unique feature of these buildings and these motifs appear in the metalwork, stonework and tile work.

This address publishes information on the species of plants identified – scientific name and common name – in the Jardim da Escola Secundária São João do Estoril, photographs of the plants, in locu, signage of the location in the garden, on Google Earth, of representatives of each identified species, and also the indication of electronic addresses that allow access to credible information on the systematics, morphology, ecology and phytogeography of each species.

Este mês de maio, convidamos as Escolas a celebrar o Dia Internacional do Fascínio das Plantas (18 de maio) com saídas de campo, onde todos, alunos, docentes e outros membros das comunidades educativas, possam fotografar e registar a diversidade das nossas plantas, contribuindo para o conhecimento das espécies e o apreço pela natureza.
Para participar, basta utilizar a aplicação móvel iNaturalist para fotografar e registar as plantas que observe no campo. Na aplicação iNaturalist, procure o projeto “Fascínio das Plantas – Escolas” e selecione “aderir” ou “inscrever” para que as suas observações integrem este projeto.

The School Library Educational Resources Center of the Secondary School of São João do Estoril, in collaboration with the Institute of Contemporary History, Nova de Lisboa University, and the Botanical Museum, Polytechnic Institute of Beja, marks this date by publishing the virtual exhibition: “Botanical Postage Stamps” created by Professor Francisca Carvalho. This virtual exhibition presents a set of postage stamps printed on different materials: paper, fibers, wood and cork.
As an interactive exhibition, the organization challenges the educational community to complete the postage stamps on display by sending to francisca.carvalho@aesje.pt and to Biblioteca.essje@aesje.pt photographs of stamps printed on raw materials of plant origin that are less common, such as wood, cotton, linen, among others.

Para celebrar o “Dia internacional do Fascínio das Plantas” (18 de Maio), a Sociedade Portuguesa de Botânica e a BioDiversity4All – Associação Biodiversidade para Todos juntam-se novamente para organizar o “II Bioblitz Flora de Portugal”.
Neste bioblitz (inventariação relâmpago), que se realiza nos dias 20, 21 e 22 de maio, os cidadãos são convidados a registarem todas as plantas vasculares que observem ao seu redor utilizando a aplicação móvel iNaturalist / BioDiversity4All.
Em anexo (“attachment”), podem ver instruções para a participação neste projeto. Todos podem participar (desde leigos a especialistas), pelo que vos convidamos a divulgar este evento e a dinamizar saídas de campo para observação e registo de plantas. A música e a natureza trazem-nos de volta às nossas raízes. Nos bosques da Quinta, as árvores convidam-nos a silenciar a mente, escutar e abrir espaço para sentir. Ao longo de um passeio sensorial, vamos explorar a natureza através dos cinco sentidos e desvendar os segredos da comunicação das árvores.
No final, Ana Stilwell usará a sua voz e a guitarra para partilhar as suas músicas e histórias, num concerto intimista na Casa da Pesca.
Music and nature bring us back to our roots. In the woods of the Farm, the trees invite us to silence the mind, listen and make room for feeling. Throughout a sensory tour, we will explore nature through the five senses and uncover the secrets of tree communication.
In the end, Ana Stilwell will use her voice and guitar to share her songs and stories in an intimate concert at the “Casa da Pesca”.
The Ecological Educational Center of Paul de Tornada integrates this year the activities of the Fascination of Plants Day and the Week of Invasive Species 2022, in the celebration of the 22nd Anniversary of the Ecological Educational Center.

Pretende-se celebrar a Biodiversidade da Quinta e construir o Domo da Polinização! Como as abelhas, é objetivo criar em família, uma estrutura para ser habitada por muitos desenhos das plantas silvestres surpreendentes que nos rodeiam. Os desenhos das plantas em pano de algodão serão amaciados com cera de abelha para transformar o Domo num abrigo de histórias. No final é apresentada a técnica do pano-cera, para transportarmos o nosso lanche.
To celebrate the Biodiversity of the Farm, we will build the Dome of Pollination! Like bees, the goal is to create somenthing with family, a structure to be inhabited by many drawings of the amazing wild plants that surround us. The drawings of the plants, in cotton cloth, will be softened with beeswax to turn the Dome into a story shelter. The technique of the wax cloth will be presented at the end, to carry our snacks.

The activity consists in the preparation and painting of a watercolour illustration using natural paints made from plants.
The participant is invited to explore nature and the diversity of plants, discover some botanical families and their characteristics, specially those that will be used for the preparation of paints and occur naturally nearby.
Esta atividade tem como objetivo apresentar o grupo das abelhas, mais em específico as abelhas solitárias. Vamos aprender os principais mecanismos comportamentais deste grupo (procura de alimento, hábitos de nidificação e sociabilidade), perceber a importância destes animais para o equilibro dos ecossistemas e como podemos, através de estruturas simples (ninhos), ajudar na sua conservação. No decorrer da atividade, vamos ainda proceder à observação de diferentes espécies de abelhas que se podem atrair através da colocação destes ninhos e/ou plantação de espécies de flores específicas.
This activity aims to present the group of bees, more specifically solitary bees. We will learn the main behavioural mechanisms of this group (search for food, nesting habits and sociability), understand the importance of these animals for the balance of ecosystems and how we can, through simple structures (nests), help in their conservation. In the course of the activity, we will also observe different species of bees that can be attracted by placing these nests and/or planting specific flower species.

Water is crucial for life. In Mediterranean conditions agriculture largely depends on water. Irrigated viticulture and olive production expanded fast in Southern Europe as means to minimize risks, guarantee yield and quality. However, more efficient use is obligatory to save and protect water resources. Good management of water and irrigation systems demands a good understanding of plant’s/crop’s water use. In this demo session we will show/discuss the major factors influencing plant/crop water relations, and how we can robustly monitor soil/plant water status. This is a joint initiative of the projects EU-NEFERTITI and VINazReg, which are focused on demo actions near professionals to promote a more wise and sustainable use of water in Portuguese viticulture and olive production.
O laboratório colaborativo (CoLAB) InnovPlantProtect (InPP) celebra o Dia do Fascínio das Plantas 2022 promovendo o 1º Encontro de Clubes Ciência Viva das Escolas Secundárias do distrito de Portalegre, na tarde de 19 de maio, com o apoio do Centro Ciência Viva de Estremoz, e uma visita guiada aos novos laboratórios do InPP. A tarde termina com uma deslocação ao Jardim Municipal de Elvas, o maior espaço verde da cidade e dono de uma assinalável biodiversidade em matéria de espécies arbóreas.
O objetivo deste encontro é que os Clubes do distrito se conheçam uns aos outros e apresentem os projetos que têm desenvolvido e que planeiam desenvolver. A iniciativa conjunta entre o InPP, as Escolas e o CCV Estremoz visa promover uma cultura de conhecimento sobre a importância das plantas através do deslumbramento que o mundo vegetal proporciona, seja em casa, na rua, no campo ou na praia, na floresta, no pomar, na horta, no campo agrícola ou na montanha.
InnovPlantProtect (InPP) collaborative lab celebrates Fascination of Plants Day 2022 organizing the 1st Meet & Greet of Ciência Viva Clubs at Secondary Schools in Portalegre district, in Portugal’s hinterland, on May 19, with the support of Estremoz Ciência Viva Centre, and a guided tour to InPP’s new labs. The afternoon ends with a visit to Elvas Municipal Garden, the largest green space in the city, boasting a significant biodiversity in terms of tree species.
The goal of the meeting is for “Living Science” Clubs to get to know each other and present their ongoing and future projects. The joint initiative between InPP, the schools and CCV Estremoz aims to promote a culture of knowledge on the importance of plants through the fascination with the plant world in general, be it at home, on the street, in the countryside or at the beach, in the woods, the orchard, the vegetable garden, the crop field or the mountains.
O PubhD (pub de bar e PhD de doutoramento) é um movimento de divulgação da ciência que surgiu em Nottingham (2014) e se alastrou a cerca de vinte cidades europeias. Consiste em encontros em bares onde estudantes de doutoramento são desafiados a explicar a sua investigação ao público presente, num ambiente descontraído e informal, usando linguagem simples e desconstruída. Com a ajuda de um mapa, que identifica e localiza as diferentes espécies arbóreas existentes na Quinta, cada participante poderá criar um percurso pelo mundo fascinante das plantas que aqui encontramos.
Neste dia comemorativo, este mapa estará disponível para os visitantes da Quinta.
O impacte das alterações climáticas pode ser mitigado com soluções inspiradas na natureza tal como, as coberturas verdes. Os efeitos mais evidentes de fenómenos climatéricos extraordinários são (i) as fortes vagas de calor que levam a períodos de seca mais ou menos severos e (ii) as inundações, com consequências muitas vezes catastróficas sobretudo em grandes cidades. As coberturas verdes constituem assim soluções baseadas na natureza que prestam vários serviços ecossistémicos, nomeadamente: isolamento térmico dos edifícios onde são aplicadas, o que contribui para a redução de custos energéticos dos mesmos; gestão de águas pluviais e para diminuição do risco de inundações.
Neste workshop, após a apresentação desta tecnologia e do guia técnico publicado em 2020 pela Associação Nacional de Coberturas Verdes (ANCV), tendo em vista o projeto, construção e manutenção de coberturas verdes, os participantes serão convidados a “desenhar” (idealizar) uma cobertura verde em áreas selecionadas do Campus de Gualtar, que possam ser melhoradas com adequado projeto de re-construção.

To celebrate the Fascination of Plants Day, we are meeting at the University of Aveiro’s Herbarium to discover more about the unique properties of plants that are all around us in the countryside or even in the city. Some, with the passage of time and research, ended up being used in the pharmaceutical industry.
There is evidence of its use since Antiquity, to treat a variety of health problems and, nowadays, it is part of popular knowledge that is progressively disapearing over the years.
This is a conversation where you can learn a bit more about the different therapeutic uses of plants and their importance, as well as their role in gastronomy and cultural traditions.
There will also be a guided visit of the Herbarium.
Para celebrar o Dia Internacional do Fascínio das Plantas, iremos juntar-nos no herbário da Universidade de Aveiro para descobrir mais sobre as propriedades únicas das plantas, que nos rodeiam no campo ou mesmo na cidade. Algumas, com o passar do tempo e a investigação, acabaram por ser utilizadas pela indústria farmacêutica.
Há indícios da sua utilização desde a Antiguidade, para tratar os mais diversos problemas de saúde e, atualmente, é um saber popular com tendência para se perder ao longo das gerações.
Esta é uma conversa onde poderá aprender um pouco mais sobre os diversos usos terapêuticos das plantas e a sua importância, assim como o seu papel na culinária e tradições culturais.

What do we know about our native forests? What is their real value and what secrets do they hide? In this workshop we will unveil the resilience mechanisms of forests, following the clues of scientific discoveries, the use of communication networks between trees, and the interaction between them. What potentialities do they reveal to us? Inspired by the mother trees, “listening” to their teachings and messages, we will be invited to reflect on our relationship with Nature and on the future sustainability of our forests.

O Museu Nacional do Traje, em Lisboa, assinala o Dia Internacional do Fascínio das Plantas, com um convite para uma Visita Guiada ao Jardim Histórico do Parque Monteiro-Mor, sob o tema “As árvores do parque que nos fascinam”, orientada pelo Arq. Rui Costa.
Deixe-se surpreender pelas magníficas árvores deste enorme Parque setecentista e de tradição portuguesa, onde são contempladas as áreas de recreio e jardim, o roseiral, o pomar, os prados, pinhal e a horta.
Aqui se encontra a primeira Araucaria heterophylla conhecida em Portugal continental. Vamos identificar as espécies mais comuns, outras exóticas, e conhecer as muitas histórias que estes exemplares arbóreos nos têm para contar.
The National Museum of Costume, in Lisboa, celebrates the Fascination of Plants Day, with an invitation to a Guided Tour to its Historic Garden in Park Monteiro-Mor, under the theme “The trees of the park that fascinate us”, guided by Architect Rui Costa.
Let yourself be surprised by the magnificent trees of this enormous 18th century park designed in the Portuguese tradition, where the garden, the rosarium, the orchard, the meadows, the pine woods and the vegetable garden are contemplated.
The first Araucaria heterophylla known in mainland Portugal can be found here. We will identify the most common species, other exotic ones, and learn about the many stories that these arboreal specimens have to tell us.
The Herb Garden is a garden with educational and recreational purposes. In the past, this was the garden of the palace of São Pedro, residence of the Counts of Carvalhal, where presently is housed the Natural History Museum of Funchal. The Herb Garden was officially opened on June 5th 2000, World Environment Day. This is a pleasant place where visitors can learn more about aromatic and medicinal plants from the five continents. Here one will be also able to find some native and endemic plants of Madeira.
Most of these plants are still used in folk medicine. Like the lemon grass (Cymbopogon citratus), the fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) and rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) that are used to make infusions. Despite its medicinal properties and uses, all plants require some care when using them.
In the Garden, visitors may find some representative trees of the Laurisilva (indigenous forest of Madeira) such as the fetid laurel (Ocotea foetens). Also significant to the Garden, is the existence of an old dragon tree (Dracaena draco) embedded on a basalt outcrop.
Visit the cork exhibition at Suberoteca Nacional Albino de Carvalho
The National Institute of Agriculture and Veterinary, INIAV, I.P. (INIAV) at Oeiras has important cork samples collections to see and to appreciate. It stores more than 3000 cork samples from the first cork quality (growth and porosity) study carried out at national level, that was initiated in 1982 by Albino de Carvalho. It also stores exceptional cork samples from Portugal, Morocco and Tunisia, in the Vieira Natividade Collection (initiated in 1932). The rest of the cork samples came from diverse regions in Portugal, under several research studies at INIAV, and constitutes a dynamic collection, under construction, for a real database of the quality of Portuguese cork.

Roots in Tubes!
To celebrate the sixth international “Fascination of Plants Day” the National Institute for Agricultural and Veterinary Research (INIAV I.P.) will hold a hands-on exposition of the scientific work performed at the Plant Nematology Lab (NemaINIAV), centred around the use of transgenic roots (hairy roots) in the development of sustainable approaches to manage plant parasitic nematodes in agriculture. Come and see these roots in tubes at Quinta do Marquês in Oeiras!

Para celebrar o sexto evento internacional “Dia do Fascínio das Plantas” o Instituto Nacional de Investigação Agrária e Veterinária, I.P. (INIAV I.P.) vai promover uma exposição interativa do trabalho científico realizado no Laboratório de Nematologia Vegetal (NemaINIAV), centrado no uso de raízes transgénicas no desenvolvimento de abordagens sustentáveis de gestão de nemátodes fitoparasitas em ambiente agronómico. In agricultural ecosystems, numerous plant species emerge as undesirable plants known as weeds. However, these plants have resources for pollinators and are refuges for auxiliary fauna, they are providers of edible wild food, medicines, and other goods and services for human well-being and society. The guided tour will take palce at the School of Agriculture Campus, University of Lisbon and will allow us to discover the hidden treasures of the spontaneous plant biodiversity in agroecosystems and will help to better understand the need for sustainable control and tolerance of these communities. On 18 May, we will go through the vineyards, orchards, crops, and trails of Tapada da Ajuda to recognize the importance of these diverse and beautiful floristic communities.

Terminaremos com exemplos de matérias-primas de origem vegetal utilizadas em arte.

We will have a 90-minute online session on the symbolic and material metamorphosis of plants.
We will study examples (daffodil, hyacinth, mint, laurel, myrrh, etc.) of the metamorphosis of humans into plants, in the Greco-Roman context and, also, of their symbolic use in Christian Art.
We will end with examples of raw materials of plant origin used in art.
Herbaria are the material testimony about plants and the World they share with us. They are Natural History collections that, besides plants themselves, harbour the memory about naturalists and people involved in the study and collection of plants.
The herbarium LISE is a reference herbarium and also one of the largest in Portugal. Many research programs insystematics, floristics and vegetation ecology happened there. We will show something of the collection: herbarium sheets, books and pictures of plants & people around the present and history of our herbarium. A informal talk, Q & A -style will inform people about the functions and workings of haerbaria and of our herbarium.

There are many trees in the farm, but there is one that stands out: the Olive Tree. From the roadmap “The trees of the Farm”, we will walk through the farm, paying special attention to this species that is, not only, a rich fruit, but also a very powerful symbol, showing that there are many reasons to love this… plant!
São muitas as árvores da Quinta, mas há uma que, inevitavelmente, se destaca: a Oliveira. A partir do roteiro “As árvores da Quinta”, iniciaremos um passeio tranquilo pela Quinta, dando uma atenção especial a esta espécie que, para além do fruto riquíssimo, está também carregada de simbolismo, mostrando que razões não faltam para adorarmos esta… planta!
Vamos descobrir os nutrientes do bago de uva e os microorganismos que vivem à sua superfície, a receita perfeita para a produção do vinho!

Vamos descobrir os segredos de um bago de uva. Como se organizam os tecidos e as células do bago de uva? Quais os compostos químicos que os bagos de uva importam e armazenam, que importam e transformam e que sintetizam de novo? Quais as moléculas que conferem a cor ao bago de uva e o seu sabor característico, e onde se armazenam? Quais os compostos do vinho presentes no bago de uva e quais os compostos do bago uva que são transformados durante a fermentação? Quais os microrganismos que coabitam na superfície do bago, qual o seu papel na fermentação e como modificam a qualidade do vinho? O bago de uva é uma fábrica bioquímica fascinante.

Será realizada uma visita orientada pelos técnicos do Instituto das Florestas e Conservação da Natureza, IP-RAM ao Jardim Botânico da Madeira-Eng.º Rui Vieira, a alunos da Universidade Sénior de Câmara de Lobos, ao longo de um roteiro interpretativo da flora existente, criado para este evento. Para tal, cerca de duas dezenas das plantas que serão observadas no circuito estão identificadas com uma placa informativa, onde é possível ler e descobrir alguns pormenores fascinantes sobre elas! No final desta atividade todos os participantes serão agraciados com uma planta, como registo da sua participação no Dia Internacional do Fascínio das Plantas.
De referir que, o roteiro interpretativo alusivo ao Fascínio das Plantas, estará disponível aos visitantes do Jardim Botânico da Madeira-Eng.º Rui Vieira, de 13 a 23 de maio de 2022.
O Dia Internacional do Fascínio das Plantas celebra-se no dia 18 de maio e o ITQB NOVA abre as suas portas para uma manhã repleta de atividades para alunos do 3º ciclo.
Com o objetivo de sensibilizar os mais novos para a importância do conhecimento sobre as plantas o seu papel na nossa vida e sustentabilidade do planeta, os alunos terão a oportunidade de conhecer a ciência que se faz no nosso instituto, conversar com investigadores, e realizar várias atividades. The Fascination of Plants Day is celebrated on May 18th and ITQB NOVA opens its doors for a morning full of activities for 3rd cycle students.
Aiming to raise awareness among the youngest to the importance of knowledge about plants and their role in our lives and the planet’s sustainability, students will have the opportunity to learn about the science that is done in our institute, talk to researchers, and participate in different activities. Join us to explore the fascinating world of plants!
Elaboração de desenhos com folhas coletadas ao longo do espaço do Parque Biológico, chamando à atenção das espécies autóctones do pais e as diferenças entre as mesmas. Esta atividade pressupõem uma visita guiada pelo espaço e uma atividade “hands on” para os mais novos.

Elaboration of Art Land with leaves collected along the Biological Park, in a guided tour that speaks out the native species of Portugal and the diferences between them. This activity promotes a “hands on” moments for the youngest.
This workshop will discuss important aspects related to urban green infrastructures with a special focus in the Lisbon city. The workshop will present and discuss some of the major issues concerning management of urban trees and gardens, urban horticulture, and urban biodiversity spots. The workshop will also include a presentation of the initiative European Green Cities Award – Portugal, its activities.
Overall, this is an actual and relevant topic for urban areas, which are experiencing fast changes and increasing problems (pollution, climate extremes, etc.). The event will be relevant for a wide audience (academy, students, ornamental industry, local government, private companies, political decision makers and municipality technicians) and it will be a joint initiative of the LPVVA (Laboratório de Patologia Vegetal Veríssimo de Almeida – https://www.isa.ulisboa.pt/lpvva) and the LEAF (Linking Landscape, Environment, Agriculture and Food research Centre – https://www.isa.ulisboa.pt/en/leaf).
A presentation and debate on the famous plant from the Namib desert, Welwitschia mirabilis, will take place at the Gabriel Pereira Secondary School, Évora, Portugal. The history of the expedition, in which this species was described for the first time, as well the biology of the desert plant will be described in this presentation. In addition, it will be shown, how research can have different outputs, for example, a children’s book on Welwitschia.

The Alentejo Biotechnology Center for Agriculture and Agro-food (CEBAL) joins the International Fascination of Plants Day celebrations with the webinar “Olive tree viruses: from disease-causing to plant protectors” for all interested. If you are curious to know more about the olive tree viruses, a plant of great economic interest for the Alentejo, and the diagnostic and plant improvement technologies that make it possible to transform these viruses into “vaccines” that teach the plant’s immune system to protect against infections caused by microorganisms (such as bacteria), we invite you to attend this webinar, which will be held on the 17th of May 2022 at 11:30 am, with Maria do Rosário Félix, professor at University of Évora (UÉ) and scientist at Mediterranean Institute for Agriculture, Environment and Development (MED).

Sabia que a PISTACEIRA (Pistacia vera L., família das Anacardeáceas) é uma árvore nativa do sudoeste asiático? Pode vê-la em Oeiras, numa coleção estabelecida em 1995 no campus do INIAV, I.P. A coleção possui árvores de diversas variedades, umas femininas e outras masculinas. A sua área de cultivo alargou-se da Ásia a outras regiões, como a Califórnia (E.U.A.) e a Região do Mediterrâneo. Os seus frutos, os pistácios são ricos em fósforo, magnésio e proteínas e são frequentemente consumidos inteiros, torrados e salgados (como os amendoins) ou frescos.
Did you know that PISTACHIO TREE (Pistacia vera L., Anacardiaceae family) is a tree native to Southeast Asia? You can see it in Oeiras, in a collection established since 1995 at INIAV, I.P. Campus. The collection has trees of several varieties, some female and others male. Its cultivation area extended from Asia to other regions, such as California (USA) and the Mediterranean Region. Its fruits, pistachios are rich in phosphorus, magnesium and proteins and are often eaten whole, roasted and salted (like peanuts) or fresh.
Do you know that there are cultivated trees in Oeiras that bear fruits similar to ‘our’ European Nut, although smaller, tastier, known as ‘Pecan nut’ or also ‘Carya’? Maybe you’ve already seen them in the supermarket. They are eaten like nuts, or in ice-creams; being energetic and rich in an oil for cosmetics. Originating in the Southeastern US and Northern Mexico, this tree is the symbol of the State of Texas, being cultivated in other regions. In Oeiras, these trees are now in full bloom.
Sabe que existem, em Oeiras, árvores cultivadas que dão frutos parecidos com a ‘nossa’ Noz, embora mais pequenos, saborosos, conhecidos como ‘Noz- pecan’ ou, também, ‘Cária’? Talvez já os tenha visto no supermercado. Comem-se como frutos secos, em gelados; são energéticos e ricos num óleo para a cosmética. Originária da região do Sudeste dos EUA e Norte do México, esta árvore é o símbolo do Estado do Texas, sendo cultivada em outras regiões. Em Oeiras, as árvores encontram-se, agora em plena floração.
