Fascination of Plants Day

A walk around the Jagiellonian University (UJ) Third Campus, during which we will search for plants with therapeutic properties. You will learn how to easily test whether a given plant contains compounds that can be used in medicine, what types of compounds these are, and how they work. We will often walk on grass and unpaved paths, so comfortable footwear is recommended.

Please note: In the event of very bad weather, the event will be moved indoors and transformed into a series of workshops/demonstrations, where participants will be able to conduct various analyses and observations hands-on.

Why do some plants hunt animals? What does the menu of a carnivorous plant look like? Can we encounter them during a walk, and if so, where? This presentation and workshop session will give you an up-close look at this extraordinary group of plants, including species with intriguing names like sundew, butterwort, Venus flytrap, and pitcher plant. We will peek inside the traps of carnivorous plants, touch them, and even smell them — all to find out how they lure, catch, and digest their prey, and, above all, who is eating whom?!…

What is a plant? What is a carotenoid? Are carotenoids produced only by plants? What do carotenoids provide to plants, and what do they offer to other organisms? Why are carotenoids essential for life? Is the saying “carrots are good for your eyes” a myth or a fact? These are examples of the questions I will answer during the lecture.

We have ECGs, X-rays, and CT scans, but what about plants? Do we know how to examine them? Fortunately, yes! In this lecture, I will show how scientists use chlorophyll fluorescence to quickly and non-invasively assess plant condition, as well as detect stress or disease before they become visible to the naked eye. Attendees will learn how specialized instruments work, how to perform such a test in practice, and why chlorophyll fluorescence-based methods are so vital for science, modern agriculture, and environmental protection.

The begonia is a plant that can truly surprise you with its diversity. It comes in many species and varieties – some delight with colorful flowers, while others feature ornamental leaves with fascinating patterns and shapes.

It can be small and delicate, or larger and more striking. It grows well indoors, as well as on balconies or in gardens. Thanks to this, anyone can find a begonia that perfectly fits their space.

It is an excellent choice for those who love eye-catching and spectacular plants. Through its delicacy and elegance, the begonia shows just how many different “faces” a single plant can have.

We will meet in the picturesque valley of the Rabszy Potok (Raby Stream) to immerse ourselves in the world of forest floor plants and woodland glades. The highlights of our expedition will be inconspicuous, yet rare and beautiful orchids. Even though spring is heavily delayed in the Bieszczady Mountains this year, the first butterfly orchids, fragrant orchids, and marsh orchids can already be found.

In addition, we will discover many fascinating plants whose shapes, colors, and perhaps scents might completely surprise us. The walk will conclude with a campfire gathering by the shelter in Rabe. We will be walking along paths and paved roads leading through the valley and towards the Beaver Lake. Please bring outdoor/hiking footwear and your own food for the campfire.
