10:30 AM – 11:30 AM — “The Richness of Xerothermic Grasslands”
-
11:30 AM – 1:00 PM — “Biodiverse Landscape”
-
1:00 PM – 2:00 PM — “Nature and landscape walk combined with butterfly counting”
A walk around the Jagiellonian University (UJ) Third Campus, during which we will search for plants with therapeutic properties. You will learn how to easily test whether a given plant contains compounds that can be used in medicine, what types of compounds these are, and how they work. We will often walk on grass and unpaved paths, so comfortable footwear is recommended.
Please note: In the event of very bad weather, the event will be moved indoors and transformed into a series of workshops/demonstrations, where participants will be able to conduct various analyses and observations hands-on.
We warmly invite you for a walk through the Botanical Garden. In the spotlight are ornamental native plants: lilies of the valley, globeflowers, irises, geraniums, and many others. We will also take a look at species originating from distant parts of the world that take center stage in the May borders.

Join us for an expedition where, while wandering through the Botanical Garden, you will cross all continents in just a few hours and discover the diversity of plants from the farthest corners of the world – from the temperate zone through the taiga, deserts, and savannas, all the way to tropical rainforests.
During this botanical journey, you will learn not only about unique plant species but also their significance in world cultures and their adaptations to environmental conditions. It is a perfect choice for nature lovers, travel enthusiasts, and anyone who enjoys discovering the extraordinary.
The event begins by the aquariums with a short introduction on the importance of knowing the properties of houseplants. Participants will then get to know selected species of potted plants found across the UwB Campus, which were previously cataloged and described by students from the botanical section of the Biology Student Research Club (KNB).
During the walk around the UwB Campus, special attention will be paid to the properties of the plants discussed – including their potential toxicity, medicinal uses, and culinary potential. This will be complemented by information on the biology of these species, as well as historical and cultural trivia related to the presented plants.
We will meet in the picturesque valley of the Rabszy Potok (Raby Stream) to immerse ourselves in the world of forest floor plants and woodland glades. The highlights of our expedition will be inconspicuous, yet rare and beautiful orchids. Even though spring is heavily delayed in the Bieszczady Mountains this year, the first butterfly orchids, fragrant orchids, and marsh orchids can already be found.
In addition, we will discover many fascinating plants whose shapes, colors, and perhaps scents might completely surprise us. The walk will conclude with a campfire gathering by the shelter in Rabe. We will be walking along paths and paved roads leading through the valley and towards the Beaver Lake. Please bring outdoor/hiking footwear and your own food for the campfire.
