Fascination of Plants Day

The seventh international “Fascination of Plants Day” around 18 May 2024 will be launched by plant scientists across the world under the umbrella of the European Plant Science Organisation (EPSO).

The goal of this activity is to get as many people as possible around the world fascinated by plants and enthused about the importance of plant science for agriculture and sustainable production of nutritious food, as well as for horticulture, forestry and the production of plant-based non-food products such as paper, timber, chemicals, energy and pharmaceuticals. The role of plants in environmental conservation is also a key message.

Everybody is welcome to join this initiative!

Mount Congreve, one of the great botanical gardens of the world which is visited by thousands of people each year, also nurtures often unseen and unexplored habitats. Join Author, photographer and naturalist Paddy Dwan to discover the wide variety of flora and fauna which quietly flourishes in the shadow of the great landscaped estate. Marsh, meadow and woodland combine to lead you across a small river which feeds into the river Suir. The marsh is the domain of rushes, sedges, reeds wild flowers and grasses which in turn host a wide variety of birds, butterflies, bees and insect life. Listen to the song of the sedge and reed warbler which mimic the calls of other birds they encounter on their long journey from tropical Africa. The elusive kingfisher and nocturnal otter find their home along the river and the occasional dipper may be observed as it walks under water in search of larvae and other delicacies.

Climate change will affect all citizens and the measures that will be taken to combat climate change will impact on all. MET Eireann’s Head of Forecasting, Evelyn Cusack will be headlining an event where citizens can engage on climate change, particularly focussing on the role of research. We know what we know about climate change and about what might happen in the future through research. A great deal of this research is funded by the EU and the Irish government. Therefore, citizens should know more about how the research works and also have a say in the future of that research.

This meeting is part of a European project on Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) called Nucleus and is coordinated by Calmast STEM Centre from Waterford Institute of Technology. It runs during the South-East Bealtaine Living Earth Festival.

ABOUT THE EVENT

Workshop Leader: Richard McMullen

Venue: The Barn, Tyrrellspass, Co. Westmeath

Date: Saturday, 18th May

Time: 10:00 – 16:00

Audience: improving botanists

Fee: €30 standard; €20 student

When one becomes familiar with a relatively small number of botanical structures it is possible, by using botanical keys, to identify any wild or naturalised flowering plant in Ireland. This workshop will introduce you to these structures and we will then use this knowledge to key out an array of wild plants using the 8th edition of Webb’s ‘An Irish Flora’.

The National Biodiversity Data Centre is a national organisation for the collection, collation, management, analysis and dissemination of data on Ireland’s biological diversity. Biodiversity data are a key requirement for understanding our natural surroundings, for tracking change in our environment and for gaining a greater insight on how we benefit from, and impact upon, the ecosystem goods and services provided by biological diversity; a national asset which contributes at least €2.6 billion to the Irish economy each year. The Data Centre was established by the Heritage Council in 2007 and is funded by the Heritage Council and the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht. The Centre is operated under a service level agreement by Compass Informatics Limited, an information and location technologies company focused on applications in natural resources and planning.

How Food Grows with Michael Kelly of GIY – €65
How Food Grows with Michael Kelly - €65

Interested in growing some food yourself, or just curious about how the food you eat grows and where it comes from?  Join GIY founder, best-selling author and presenter of RTE’s GROW COOK EAT Michael Kelly for a full day immersed in real food at the home of the GIY movement, GROW HQ in Waterford.  This one-day course will strengthen your connection with and understanding of real food, take the mystery out of how food grows and immerse you in GIY’s ‘grow, cook, eat’ ethos.

Michael Kelly’s personal story is about the potential of food to change lives.  A random moment with a bulb of imported Chinese garlic in a supermarket 15 years ago started him on a food growing journey that transformed his health and led him to leave his IT job and start the GIY movement.  He grows food for a family of four on a windy acre in Dunmore East. His food ethos is simple, no-nonsense:

1.EAT Whole foods
2.Follow the Seasons
3.EAT Organic
4.EAT local or homegrown
5.LOVE your Food

“I think one of the biggest challenges for our society is that we’ve lost our connection and understanding with food,” says Michael.  “For me growing food is not about gardening, it’s about food.  Pure and simple.  I am obsessed with real food and what I love about growing it is that it has thought me so much about how food works and where it comes from.  My food growing has made me a more informed and better consumer, made me healthier and happier.”

You don’t need ANY prior knowledge about growing food to come along.  Nor do you need to be considering a massive life-change where you’ll be growing all your own food.  You might not even have the space to grow a lot of food.

You will learn about how fruit, herbs and veg grow, how and when to sow a variety of seeds as well as the connection between your health and the health of the soil where your food comes from.  Michael will demonstrate GROW HQ’s organic approach to keeping plants and soil healthy, managing slugs and other pests, and simple techniques to get the most veg from the smallest of spaces.

On the day you will get to sow seeds (and take home a newly-planted seed pot), tour the GROW HQ gardens with Mick and enjoy a delicious, award-winning, home-grown HQ lunch cooked by our award winning Head Chef JB Dubois.  At the end of the day take home a variety of veg growing guides, and lots of other information to get you growing.
