Fascination of Plants Day

This podcast seeks to raise awareness of plants, in particular what they are capable of, what is known about them and about current research. Although our lives are dependent on them, plants rarely grab the limelight in media reports or press articles. And although they are recognised by most people as a vital life form, described as such and are linked to very positive sentiments, they are easily overlooked in our busy day-to-day lives. They are actually not just green and multi-dimensional but are also very quiet. With this series of podcasts we want to take you on a journey through the world of plants

Taking the annual fascination of plants day into account the “Julius Kuehn Institute”, JKI in short, invited the public to Fri-Day of open-doors. Late in the afternoon on May 20th 2022 the German Research Centre for Cultivated Plants opened the gates to its Quedlinburg headquarters. From 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. visitors could learn about JKIs research at 7 field stations and 3 greenhouse-stations. The 10 stations were part of a pop-quiz-ralley. By answering the majority oft he multiple-choice-questions correctly, visitors could take home potted herbs or other small treats. Since this was the first open-door-day after the pandemic, several VIP-guests such as represantitives from city hall, ministry of agriculture and heads of sister research institutions and authorities paid a visit as well.

On May 20th, a Friday, 45 students from the Quedlinburg high school were invited by the “Julius Kuehn Institute” (JKI,  the German Research Centre for Cultivated Plants, to participate in a science slam. This is a popular format to raise the general public’s awareness for the wonders of science and research and in the case of the JKI, it is of course plant research. Three JKI scientists battled it out by convincing the students with their 7-minute-pep-talks, why their particular field of interest is worth rooting for. The students as the audience vote for “best presenter” by giving points for creative approach, comprehensibility, and overall presentation skills. As a special twist, the slamming scientists also had to find a plausible connection between their research of aphids, medicinal plants, and wheat breeding to Gregor Mendel and the inheritance rules he postulated. Since in 2022 the father of genetics would have celebrated his 200th birthday, this jubilee was also taken into account by the organizers of the JKI-Science slam promoting the fascination of plants and plant breeding.  For info on the Mendel200 jubilee visit https://gregormendel200.org/legacy/benefit/.
