The seventh international “Fascination of Plants Day” around 18 May 2024 will be launched by plant scientists across the world under the umbrella of the European Plant Science Organisation (EPSO).
The goal of this activity is to get as many people as possible around the world fascinated by plants and enthused about the importance of plant science for agriculture and sustainable production of nutritious food, as well as for horticulture, forestry and the production of plant-based non-food products such as paper, timber, chemicals, energy and pharmaceuticals. The role of plants in environmental conservation is also a key message.
As part of the Fascination of Plants Day, we will introduce you to the wide range of scientific activities we do at the Institute. A varied programme awaits you in the open air and in the light of the laboratories. At the stations you will learn:
What can water and wind do in the fields ?
– Bumblebee reality show live.
– Hidden life in the fields or discover the secrets of insect life in the agricultural landscape.
– Do we know what we eat? Mushrooms are not just for enjoyment.
– A chilling science show. What does boiling water poured into liquid nitrogen at -196°C do? Try smashing a flower into dust, or changing the shape of an inflated balloon.
– Uncover the secrets of berry plants.
– Get to know plants with all your senses.
Na akci budou prezentovány i informace o společenské roli České společnosti experimentální biologie rostlin a o možnostech členství v této profesní organizaci.
Interested participants will learn about basic and applied plant research currently carried out at the Faculty of Agronomy of Mendel University in Brno. We will introduce the new premises and facilities used for education in the field of plant biology. Participants will be introduced to how we apply knowledge based on the activities of our long-term experimental work, conferences and cooperation with other organizations. We will also look back at the past of plant cognition, thanks to Prof. Calábek’s extensive archive of films. The event will also present information about the social role of the Czech Society of Experimental Plant Biology and about the possibilities of membership in this professional organization.
Rostliny dokážou věci, které lidem často připadají jako kouzla. Přijďte se podívat, jak dokážou třeba vyrobit ze vzduchu cukr, udržet se na kolmých stěnách nebo přežít extrémní mráz polárních krajů!
Plants can do things that often seem like magic to humans. Come and see how they can make sugar out of air, hold on to vertical walls or survive the extreme cold of the polar regions!
Not only fireflies but also plants can show fluorescence. Let’s visit our workshop and explore various shining plant species. Then, we will demonstrate how flowers are viewed by various pollinators. Furthermore, we will show a simple experiment that will demonstrate how plants photosynthesize and “breathe”. Do not hesitate to visit us to find out more about plants and the processes that take place inside them!
Come and explore the fascinating world of plants with us! What can you look forward to?
How to awaken seeds – Come to our stand to see what and how everything can affect the germination of plant seeds (e.g. salt water, red or blue light, darkness, acid rain). You will be able to see the germinating seeds up close under a microscope. And not only children will be able to sow and take away one of our model plants.
The cell wall and its importance to mankind – Demonstration of the fibers of plant origin and microscopic observation of the plexus underlying the filaments, demonstration of the structure of the cell wall and the principle of cellulose synthesis.
Paleobotany – Learn about plant fossils in a temporal and systematic context (charred remains), observe specimens under binocular magnification and microscope (petrified wood, fossil cuticles, fossil pollen).
Dendrochronology – Explore the methods that allow us to determine from tree rings how the climate has changed in the past, whether trees have been affected by landslides of unstable bedrock or by acid rain.
And many, many more.
A rich programme with a number of lectures, presentations, interactive
and demonstration activities revealing interesting
things and secrets from the plant kingdom for the general public,
with a focus on primary and secondary school pupils and students.
Plant Fascination Day is an annual part of the University Botanic Garden’s May programme. This year, the programme is designed as a thematic walk through the world of useful herbs, their essential oils and other substances, medicinal mushrooms, plants providing shelter for animals or plants attracting insects through scent. Sleep sweetly through the night or for eternity.
Výstava fotografií rostlinných pletiv pořízených pomocí světelné mikroskopie. Využito bylo nejen světlé pole, ale i zobrazení pomocí fluorescence, která v rámci analýz poskytuje další informace.
Exhibition of photographs of plant tissues taken by light microscopy. Not only the light field was used, but also fluorescence imaging, which provides additional information in the analysis.
