A small seed can sprout many green lives, from a small plant to a big tree, from ornamental plants to food crops, all so essential for the survival of people and animals on this earth.
A seed hiding a world of people that are daily occupied with plants, like all the collaborators of Meise Botanic Garden, from gardeners to scientists.
Plants deserve a special day of celebration because of their importance for society. That is why we celebrate the international Fascination of Plants Day around 18 May. A day to put plants in the limelight.
Activities:
- All weekend long the newly opened WOODlab (3 May!) of the Botanic Garden is put in the spotlight. In this contemporary and unique museum you get amazed by the fantastic natural product that wood is. On the courtyard you can enjoy various fun games made of wood from 1:00 pm to 5:30 pm.

Finally, a new piece of Vrijbroekpark is ready to be explored. The “Willowness” is not just an extension of the park, it is a fine example of historical landscape. The marshy pasture still looks exactly the same as it was 300 years ago. You will be introduced to our new willow collection, which now contains around 100 species. We will be opening the “Willowness” on Saturday 18 May. You are welcome between 1 and 6 p.m. to participate in various bushcraft workshops, test the new walking path and search for aquatic animals in the pool. Snacks and drinks available. Afterwards everyone is welcome to walk, jog and enjoy this beautiful piece of nature. You can find more information on www.vrijbroekpark.be (only in Dutch).

Given the historical importance of Ghent and Ghent University for plant research, we will take part in the Fascination For Plants Day 2019 to inform the broad public about the amazing plant research performed at Ghent University. To reach a broad audience, we aim to fill the ‘stadshal’ in the city center of Ghent with information booths and stands allowing active participation of the public. Several different topics will be covered, including but not limited to:
– Installing several light microscopes and a fluorescence microscope giving people a chance to look at plants and sections of plants in great detail.
– Link classical art painting with plant breeding to show how the fruits and vegetables we know have changed in shape and color over the centuries.
– Explain classical plant breeding approaches and the advantages of novel technologies for breeding using some examples like cabbages and tomatoes.
