Fascination of Plants Day

The seventh international “Fascination of Plants Day” around 18 May 2026 will be launched by plant scientists across the world under the umbrella of the European Plant Science Organisation (EPSO).

The goal of this activity is to get as many people as possible around the world fascinated by plants and enthused about the importance of plant science for agriculture and sustainable production of nutritious food, as well as for horticulture, forestry and the production of plant-based non-food products such as paper, timber, chemicals, energy and pharmaceuticals. The role of plants in environmental conservation is also a key message.

The Department of Natural Sciences of the School of Arts and Sciences at the Lebanese American University (LAU), along with the Environment and Rotaract Clubs at the university will participate in the International Fascination of Plants Day 2024, through organizing an event at the Byblos Campus on April 25, 2024.

Students enrolled in the “Introduction to Environmental Science” course will engage in activities aimed at raising awareness about global threats to plant biodiversity. They will present various posters and exhibit some of Lebanon’s native plants to highlight the importance of preserving native flora. They will explore the impact of marine and freshwater invasive species on native biodiversity, discussing specific examples such as invasive macroalgae in the Mediterranean Basin and freshwater invasive species in Lebanese rivers. Furthermore, students will educate their peers about Lebanon’s native and medicinal plants. Other students will examine the repercussions of ecosystem and biome disruption on other ecosystems and the global climate. For example, they will analyze the potential effects of large-scale solar power plant installations in deserts, such as promoting greener landscapes in the Sahara but potentially disrupting rainforests like the Amazon.

Greenhouse workshop for high school students

March 22, 2024

Dr. Tanos G. Hage

Welcome to our greenhouse workshop for high school students! In this interactive session, students will delve into the fascinating world of plants through hands-on activities and exploration.

Activities:

  1. Vegetative Plant Propagation: Students will learn about plant propagation techniques using coleus, succulents, and cacti. They will have the opportunity to propagate these plants through stem cuttings, leaf cuttings, and offsets, witnessing firsthand how new plants can be grown from existing ones.

  1. Seed Germination in Agar Plates: Students will explore the process of seed germination by planting seeds in agar plates. They will observe and document the stages of germination, gaining insight into the conditions necessary for seeds to sprout and develop into seedlings.

Discussion:

Following the activities, there will be a brief discussion where students can share their observations and insights. They will learn about the importance of plant propagation in horticulture and agriculture, as well as the significance of seed germination in plant growth and reproduction. The discussion will also touch upon the role of greenhouse environments in supporting plant propagation and experimentation.

Greenhouse Tour:

To conclude the workshop, students will embark on a guided tour of the greenhouse. They will have the opportunity to explore the diverse array of plants grown in the greenhouse, including exotic species and native varieties. During the tour, students will learn about the greenhouse’s environmental controls, irrigation systems, and sustainable practices employed to nurture healthy plant growth.

Overall, this workshop aims to inspire curiosity and appreciation for plants while providing students with practical skills in plant propagation and seed germination. Through hands-on activities and immersive experiences in the greenhouse, students will gain a deeper understanding of the intricate world of plants and the importance of conserving and cultivating plant life.
