The Seventh international “Fascination of Plants Day” will be launched by plant scientists across the world under the umbrella of the European Plant Science Organisation (EPSO).
The goal of this activity is to get as many people as possible around the world fascinated by plants and enthused about the importance of plant science for agriculture and sustainable production of nutritious food, as well as for horticulture, forestry and the production of plant-based non-food products such as paper, timber, chemicals, energy and pharmaceuticals. The role of plants in environmental conservation is also a key message.
Everybody is welcome to join this initiative!
On behalf of the Canadian Weed Science Society/ Société Canadienne de Malherbologie, we wish to welcome you to our 2022 Annual General Meeting to be held jointly with the Canadian Society of Agronomy/ Société Canadienne d’Agronomie. The theme of this year’s meeting is “Precision Weed Management – From Promise to (Almost) Reality” and will be held at the Halifax Marriott Harbourfront Hotel located at 1919 Upper Water St, Halifax NS, B3J 3J5 on the waterfront from November 14th to 17th 2022. The conference organizers have developed an exciting program including graduate student presentations, concurrent oral and poster presentation sessions on weed management and agronomy, a workshop on statistical analyses and two symposia, one on precision agriculture and another on biomass crops.
Pre-conference tours are in the works that will showcase the rich natural biodiversity and history of the region as well as the diverse agricultural systems of Nova Scotia.

In 2021, the Department of Plant Sciences celebrated the 100th anniversary of horticulture science on the University of Saskatchewan (USask) campus (https://conferences.usask.ca/horticulture100years/). In 1921, Dr. Cecil Patterson was hired by USask as a lecturer of horticulture science. In 1922, Dr. Patterson was appointed head of the newly formed Department of Horticulture Science. This 54 minute video was a part of the many activities celebrating these anniversaries. The video introduces the viewer to some of the research highlights conducted at the USask horticulture field plots, Patterson Arboretum (https://patterson-arboretum.usask.ca/), greenhouses and includes some of the interesting back stories. Combined with its 67 acres of fully equipped research horticultural field plots, 5 acres of close to 1000 tree and shrub species at Patterson Arboretum and the 20,000 sq.ft. modern greenhouses, horticultural research at the University of Saskatchewan has the largest commercial-scale facilities located on the core of any university campus in Canada.
